When you keep your filter healthy, it keeps your water safe. Clean your Bladder Filter at least once per day to help maintain flow rate. Note: Avoid letting the filter dry without cleaning and backwashing it.

Additional clean plastic water bottle with threads (if using a cleaning coupling)
Before You Start
Have a clean workspace ready.
Wash your hands with soap and water.
Step 01
Cleaning plunger method: Filter a cup of water

Filter one last cup of water to use for backwashing.
Tip: Make sure to use a clean cup.
Step 02
Cleaning plunger method: Fill plunger with clean water

Fill the cleaning plunger with the filtered water in the cup.

Cleaning plunger method: Remove the hose

Step 04
Cleaning plunger method: Connect the plunger to the filter

Remove the filter cap and insert the plunger onto the tip of the filter.

Cleaning plunger method: Backwash the filter

Use the palm of your hand to backwash the filter with force into an appropriate disposal location. Repeat this 3 times or until the water runs clear.
Tip: Discard the backwashed water. Avoid letting the filter dry without cleaning and backwashing it.

Cleaning coupling method: Check filter type

Backwashing using the cleaning coupling and a clean plastic water bottle is only possible with Sawyer filters with threads on the output side (ex. Sawyer Squeeze and Sawyer Dual Threaded Mini)

Cleaning coupling method: Fill bottle with clean water

Fill a clean, threaded plastic bottle with filtered water.

Cleaning coupling method: Remove the hose

Remove the hose from the bladder.
Step 09
Cleaning coupling method: Connect the bottle to the filter

Screw the cleaning coupling onto the drinking side of the filter. Then screw the bottle of filtered water onto the cleaning coupling.
Step 10
Cleaning coupling method: Backwash the filter

Tip the bottle upside down and squeeze forcefully to backwash the filter. Repeat until the water runs clear and easily.
Tip: Discard the backwashed water. Avoid letting the filter dry without cleaning and backwashing it.
Step 11
Reattach the cap

Reattach the cap back onto the filter.
