Preparing your Sawyer bottle filter is simple and takes only a few minutes. This guide will walk you through each step to ensure your system provides clean water for years to come.

Before You Start

Choose a standard plastic bottle (ex. soda or water bottle).

Step 01

Find a bottle to use

Find a bottle to use

Find a standard plastic water bottle. For example, a soda or water bottle with a threaded cap.

Tip: Avoid any bottle that previously stored chemicals or toxic materials.

Screw on the filter

Screw on the filter

Gently screw the filter onto the plastic bottle. Do not over-tighten, simply use finger strength only.

Tip: An overtightened filter can damage the white gasket.

Locate a clean container

Locate a clean container

Find a clean pitcher or water container to put filtered water into.

Squeeze the bottle into the clean container

Squeeze the bottle into the clean container

Flip the filter cap to the open position, and squeeze the bottle of dirty water to get filtered water in the clean container.

Close the flip cap to maintain a clean filter.

Troubleshooting

If your filter is still flowing slowly after several backwashing attempts, try these additional steps:

  • Hot water soak: Soak the filter in hot (not boiling) tap water for 30-60 minutes to loosen debris.
  • Vinegar soak: If your water source is mineral-rich, soak in vinegar for 30 minutes, then backwash.
  • Deep clean cycle: After soaking, perform 5-10 vigorous backwashes to fully restore flow.
